“HOPE, FAITH, LIFE, LOVE”
11 APRIL 2008, FRIDAY, 7:30PM
CONSERVATORY CONCERT HALL
The Conservatory Chamber Singers is an open elective class for BMus students at the YSTCM, directed by Dr. Katherine Wallace. The current ensemble is made up of first-, second-, third- and fourth-year string, wind, composition and piano majors—all of whom lay aside their instruments for two hours a week, to make music with their own voices. Tonight we will explore a wide range of music, from Latin motets and French Chansons of the Renaissance, through Romantic settings of traditional secular and sacred texts, to the engaging works of twentieth century choral composers. We invite you to journey with us through our choral exploration of “faith, hope, life, love.”

The concert (outing initiated by Xuefang :)) was a showcase of brave students who have no training prior to learning for this concert. Ok, probably some did. But most would not be specialising in this area. And I thought it was a very good try and effort put in my them!
I must admit, learning so many CHEEM songs within a few months and without proper knowledge how to put a song together through singing is quite a feat! There were times where they stumbled and I almost felt as if they were going to stop the song halfway and restart. Pitching and voice placement is a bit of problem for them, but somehow sometimes when they just were lost, they managed to pick themselves up and carry on.
This concert had many flaws but always, there are good things :)
Some of them moved to the music and showed that they enjoyed themselves! And there were some nice chords formed, nice intonation by some singers and nice voices some had :) And of course! THE HALL WAS SUPERB!! Anything that you said in the hall would be reverberated and you could hear a slight echo! That's probably what saved the choir.
But in any sense, they did great as a nonprofessional choir group :) OH YES!! The Conductress Dr Katherine Wallace sings reallllyyy well :) she performed solo for Bonjour, mon coeur with 3 others.
truly enjoyed when they stood in quartet (mixed position) instead. They sounded so much better. But after that, they changed back to block position. Maybe Adyll's idea of having the choir of standing in mix will allow them to listen out more and be sensitive to their neighbours. They seemed to be more in pitch and more confident. Hmm...
But for an elective class, great job! It's the same logic: If I am to take an elective, and learn a string or piano with no prior background, I would probably not be able to perform in 3 months!! GREAT TRY GUYS :)
And the company was great!
